Lillian is one of the most talented, yet lesser-known authors that I read these days, and let me tell you, I would read her grocery list if she published it. I’ve been dying to get back to the immersive world surrounding the Love Bathhouse and the ever-expanding collection of monstrous leads! Did anyone else have a strangely intense obsession with the show, Gargoyles, when they were younger, and maybe fall in love with a cartoon character? No? Just me? Luckily, Lillian and I have similar tastes and she managed to bring me not one, but three hot gargoyle mates, Elliot, Broderick, and Alisdair. The lady love is Grace and she is a classic Lillian Lark heroine with insecurities like the rest of us which makes her come across as authentic. However, she is also a fully-developed character who is more than a swooning beauty for the heroes; she has strength and power and goals in her own life. Grace is especially lovely because she is a witch whose power manifests in her ability to sense emotions and magic contained within books, so she’s a magical librarian, which is job goals for most readers! This book, like all of Lillian’s others, feels like a safe space amongst all of the chaos of life. When I tried to nail down why this book felt so cozy to me, I realized it’s because Lillian keeps the angst at a minimum. Like the title implies, there is some deception, but it doesn’t come from a place of harm so it was easy for me to forgive. Similar to Stalked by the Kraken, there is a big bad that our loves have to go up against, but most of the story is focused on them developing their connections within this new relationship. Speaking of connections, WHEW! Lillian can write herself some love scenes and because she is an absolute goddess, that includes MM action. I really cannot get enough of this world and I am thrilled that Lillian has set herself up with an almost never-ending cast of characters that she could run with; I certainly hope they continue to speak to her muse so I can continue to curl up with them!
