This book was exactly what I was in the mood for. It’s a light adult romcom-esque story within a modern paranormal world. It’s a fun read – I didn’t think the world-building was too complicated and I enjoyed all the banter at the Senior Center. It felt very much like my favorite 2000s paranormal TV shows, so I was very much here for it. LOL… That aside, there are a lot of magical diversity mentioned in this book, but it mainly focuses on Cara’s background as she’s the MC. She’s a human, nymph, and Baba Yaga hybrid who was raised without knowing her nymph side and therefore wasn’t aware of the full potential of how powerful this combination was. The story starts out with an arranged marriage between her and William, who is an immortal demigod. They try to protect their town (Beckwell) against the Guardians throughout the book.Cara & William’s relationship went at a suitable pace, and Not Dog’s antics were super cute. Sorry if this is a spoiler, but I think the emphasis of him appearing in her dreams at the beginning were important and we should have had a whole scene where she told him about it. I felt like things were repeated or dragged out towards the end because there’s a lot of internal dialogue in the last 10 chapters as Cara is struggling with her mind. But the ending was good with a HFN, and there is mention of characters I assume were from Shelly’s previous works. This is my first book of hers and I enjoyed her writing style. Thanks to BookSirens, I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
